Beyoncé: I want to be Wonder Woman

Not content with simply having an alter ego in Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé Knowles now wants superhero status as the first black Wonder Woman

Just days after unveiling her latest alter ego, Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé Knowles has her sights on an altogether more iconic role: Wonder Woman.

A movie outing for the DC Comics superhero has been languishing in development hell for years, but now the superdiva has thrown her hat into the ring, saying she wants the part.

Knowles told the LA Times: "I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman? And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It's time for that, right?"

She is no stranger to appearing in adventurous movies roles, having starred in Austin Powers: Goldmember and The Pink Panther movies, and will next be seen playing singer Etta James in the forthcoming Cadillac Records. She said: "After doing these roles that were so emotional I was thinking to myself: 'OK, I need to be a superhero.' Although, when you think about the psychology of the heroes in the films these days, they are still a lot of work, of course, and emotional."

Beyoncé, who launched her UK comeback last night performing new single If I Were a Boy on Strictly Come Dancing, returns on November 17 with a double album of sorts, I Am ... Sasha Fierce. She explained: "I have someone else that takes over when it's time for me to work and, when I'm onstage, this alter ego that I've created that kind of protects me and who I really am. That's why half the record, I Am ... is about who I am underneath the make-up and all the exciting drama. And Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, aggressive, outspoken and glamorous side that comes out when I'm onstage."

If I Were a Boy was the highest new entry in the UK Top 40 last night, entering at No 2 behind the X Factor charity single Hero.
