Film preview: London African Film Festival, London

Various venues, Sat 29 to Dec 8

Now searching for an international audience for their artistry, Africa's industries are putting out a hugely diverse mix of films. Many of the 40-odd movies showing here concentrate on contemporary issues of life on the continent, such as the newfound freedom from patriarchy of Saharan women, or the grim reality of civil war. Highlights include the premiere of Jerusalema, South Africa's 2009 Oscar submission, a crime caper shaded by the ongoing ramifications of apartheid, Stronger Than Pain, a laugh-out-loud "Nollywood" film starring popular Nigerian comedian Nkem Owoh as a severely cuckolded husband, and Divizionz, a tale of friendship put to the test in Uganda as obstacles get in the way of one group's dreams of hip-hop stardom.
