Superb wig work and great leather jackets adorn this enjoyably ripe Seventies-period French family saga, as Canet's ambitious provincial cop deals with Cluzet's ex-con being his older brother. Called Les Liens du Sang in French (Blood Ties would have been a more apt translation), it's a mix of The Professionals and Starsky and Hutch with the lofty ambitions of The Departed or Infernal Affairs. The rock-meets-jazz funk score is a hoot, the car chases in Renault 5s hilarious and the climax unfortunately rushed. Should have been a four-part telly series.
