Kanye West has announced that there will be a film based on his latest world tour.

Yeezus the movie is “coming to theatres” according to a teaser posted to West’s official website. The trailer mixes footage from the rapper’s elaborate stage show – full of lasers, manmade mountains and bejewelled masks – as well as the time-lapse skies and galloping horses that featured in his recent Bound 2 music video. The Yeezus film will be directed by Hype Williams, one of West’s favourite collaborators, who has shot more than a dozen of his videos, including All of the Lights, Stronger and Gold Digger.

West has yet to disclose the release date for his movie, and he also hasn’t responded to Bret Easton Ellis’s recent discussion of a separate project. The rapper and the author apparently came together last year and began working on a scripted feature. “I didn’t want to at first,” Ellis said. “Then I listened to Yeezus ... and I thought, regardless of whether I’m right for this project, I want to work with whoever made this.” The proposed film is now apparently stuck “in Kanye land”, with its “whole other time-frame”.

Yesterday, Radar Online reported that the West/Ellis team-up is a biopic based on “a narrative of Kanye’s life”. While West will not himself appear on screen, his fiancée, Kim Kardashian, will have a “pivotal” role, according to an unnamed source. “Her [part] is going to be very dramatic, far from the bubbly happy persona that she’s always played.”

West himself has previously directed two short films: 2010’s Runaway and 2012’s Cannes-premiered Cruel Summer. He also worked on a proposed HBO comedy series in 2008, which never made it past a reportedly dire pilot episode.
